A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person.
Daz Iray gives the ability to render life-like portraits, under the correct lighting conditions. Artists like myself, strive for photographic realism or an impressionistic similarity in depicting their subject.
Did you know that the first portrait photograph was made in 1839. It was a self portrait of Robert Cornelius. He made an approximate quarter plate daguerreotype and wrote “The first light picture ever taken” on the back of it. It was a picture of a 30-year-old man with messy hair and a jacket.
There are no photographs of the people from the Medieval Ages, of course. However, there are a lot of paintings, because noblemen, dukes and kings liked to have their portraits as well.
When working with portraits in Daz Studio, I often go back to the works of the Masters. Rembrandt, Van Dyck and Rubens, to name a few. Light sources have a major impact on your portraits and have to be considered carefully. One can illuminate a portrait in many ways. There is not only one correct lighting.
Portraits remain one of my favourite subjects in 3D art. In photography I prefer street photography were the subjects are in their natural habitat and less posed.
“A person himself believes that all the other portraits are good likenesses except the one of himself.”Edvard Munch
Your eyes are the doorway to your heart. They reflect your emotions and inner being. A lot can be concluded from the expression of your eyes. Thus, it is no wonder that eyes have been the source of inspiration to poets, authors, and artists since time immemorial.
Berenice Abott once said: ““Photography can only represent the present. Once photographed, the subject becomes part of the past.” That is very true. A moment is captured in time. That moment can never be recovered. Make the moment count.
Portrait Photography and Fine Art
I love photographing people but mostly from a distance. Posing a model for a portrait is not easy. To many people, this is actually really uncomfortable, but yet you are asking them to smile, which often ends up looking tense and fake. I started to look at options to make my own models and pose them. That is how I discovered Daz Studio.
Creating and posing a model in the digital world is often complicated. Light reacts different in the digital world, although there are a lot of similarities. I often combine photography and digital renders to produce an image. It all starts with an idea. A concept in your head. Most important is to enjoy what you create.
